1965 -1969

  • School started as The Montessori Center by four AMI teachers and located at 2028 Alameda Padre Serra, Santa Barbara,
  • 1969: Margaret and Neil Waterfall became owners/administrators for the school as a for-profit corporation 
1969 -1972
  • The Waterfalls turn over ownership of MCS to a group of parents and teachers.
  • 1972: MCS was incorporated as a non-for-profit organization and the name was changed to Montessori Center School
1972 -1975
  • Period of rapid growth for MCS with the staff rotating administrative tasks.
  • Enrollment of 125 students.
  • 1975: School hires Margaret Cota as first full-time Director.
1977- 1978
  • School moves to the Hope School campus located at 3970 La Colina Road, Santa Barbara.
  • Pre-Primary class was added.
  • Library added.
  • Enrollment grew to 230 students with a staff of 36.
  • Carla Mathieu hired as Head of School
  • First fund raising auction held.
  • Specialist prorgrams added.
  • Nelda Nutter hired as Head of School
  • School moves to the Fairview Ave. campus in Goleta.
  • Funds raised to add a multi-purpose building.
  • Fifth Primary classroom added (Navy Door) and second Pre-Primary classroom added (Gold Door).
  • School purchases 11 acres on Hollister Ave. in Goleta to build a permanent campus.
  • Eric Swain appointed Interim Head of School
  • Patricia Colby appointed Head of School
  • Plans for permanent campus submitted to County of Santa Barbara.  
  • 50th Anniversary!
  • Library relocates to larger space.
  • Classroom space added for Spanish and robotics.
  • Santa Barbara County Approves zoning plan (GVPAC)  allowing MCS to continue plans to build new campus on Hollister Ave.
