Montessori Center School provides thematic academic camps for children from 3 to 12 years of age. Our summer sessions are a great extension of the school year, enriching your child’s education with diverse and fun programs. If you are curious about Montessori education or interested in challenging your child’s imagination this summer, explore one or more of these sessions. Please read the information below for this summer's offerings.

Primary Classes 8:15am - 2:30pm

For 3 - 5 yr. old students

Montessori Adventures June 19 - July 27 $ 1410
  (closed June 18 & July 4)  
Come dive into the Ocean! Join JoAnn Serpa for Montessori Adventures with Krista Williams (June 19 - July 13) and Carly Fors (July 16 - 27).  We will investigate the animals and plants that live in our local waters.  We will learn about local fish, ocean mammals, and plants.  We will answer questions such as: why is the ocean important to us?  What do we use that comes from the ocean?, and How can we take care of our ocean?  Our exploration will include science experiments, art projects, cooking, stories, and much more.
     
  • Students promoting to Lower Elementary (1st grade) in the fall should enroll in elementary classes.
  • For continuity, Primary students attending the first six weeks of summer will be enrolled in Montessori Adventures.

Traditional Montessori materials will be available to practice academic skills in all of these camps.

---Printmaking and Botany June 18 - June 29 $ 455
  (closed June 18)  
With Mikki Jee as their guide, students will journey into the art of printmaking with an emphasis on botany. This class will examine our wonderful MCS gardens and collect specimens for printmaking. We will celebrate Summer Solstice with special projects and our own parade. Simple yoga and healthy baking will round out this session.
     
--Puppetry Fun July 2 - July 13 $ 455
  (closed July 4)  
Join Mikki Jee to make simple puppets out of cups, spoons, tube socks and felt. We will also explore
storytelling, music and movement through rhythm instruments and simple yoga. Independence Day will
be celebrated with special projects and our own parade. Healthy baking projects will round out this
session.
     
--Tie Dye and Color Exploration July 16 - July 27 $ 500
Have fun mixing colors as we tie dye and use color in a variety of different projects.  Students will learn about primary and complimentary colors as we mix liquids and solids together to create new colors and shades.  T-shirts or tote-bags will be provided for you to tie dye, but bring something from home to dye as well!
     
--Primary Vacation Adventures July 30 - August 3 $ 245
  August 6 - August 10 $ 245
Come join the summer fun with Dorothy Miller of Rainbow Door! We will learn about ladybugs, butterflies and bees. Students will investigate these wonderful insects using insect magnifiers, butterfly nets, picture journals, craft projects, and games.

Classes for students entering 1st - 3rd grades

--Exploring Ancient Egypt
June 19 - June 22

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in Ancient Egypt?  Melanie Jacobs will lead this session as children explore the wonders of Egypt, learning about pyramids, mummies, kings, queens, and much more.  We will discover more about this fascinating time period through art projects, lessons, and activities.
     
--On to Ancient Greece and Rome June 25 - June 29 $ 255
What was it like to be a citizen of Ancient Greece or Rome?  This session will be centered around the life these people experienced.  We will investigate the wonders of these fascinating cultures through lessons, activities, cooking, and art projects.  Join Melanie Jacobs as she discovers firsthand what made these civilizations so special!
     
--The Magic Tree House I July 2 - July 6 $ 205
  (closed July 4)  
Do you love the Magic Treehouse books? Then join Irene Morales on a voyage to the middle of the ocean reading “Dolphins at Daybreak” then to a deserted island in “Pirates Past Noon.” We will read these books aloud in class and unearth more about the topics we discover through music, art, cooking and mapping activities. We will wrap up this session up with a day at the beach and a visit with “Peter Pan.”
     
--The Magic Tree House II July 9 - July 13 $ 255
Whether you didn’t get enough adventure in our last session or are new to this session, join Irene Morales for an adventure in the world of theater through “Stage Fright on a Summer Night” then into medieval England with “The Knight at Dawn.” We will read these books aloud in class and delve deeper into topics we discover through music, art, cooking and acting activities.  This week will culminate with a medieval feast fit for a King or Queen!
     
--"I'll Take Fruit for $800" July 16 - July 20 $ 255
This juicy subject is perfect for summer. What is fruit? Join Heather Burkhardt to study plants, flowers, pollinators and how plants develop fruit. Activities will include cooking, art projects, reading, math, writing, games, songs, experiments, a field trip to Fairview Gardens and creating our own Fruit Jeopardy game. 
     
--"I'll Take Fruit for $1000 July 23 - July 27 $ 255
Learn some juicy details about these tasty treats. Explore the many groups of fruit with Heather Burkhardt, special activities will be planned around a different fruit group each day. We will read, write, sing, play games, cook, do math and art projects as we learn and prepare for the grand finale, Fruit Jeopardy.
     

Classes for students entering 3rd - 6th grades

Outdoor Adventures June 19 - June 22 $ 205

  June 25 - June 29 $ 255
If you enjoy the great outdoors, then this is the class for you!  Enjoy the wilderness world through tracking, plant identification, and the art of wilderness survival with Loric Box.  Learn how to make a fire drill and build various survival shelters with only the materials the wilderness provides.  Play wilderness games that heighten your senses.  Listen to wonderful stories about outdoor adventures and the wild.  Use your imagination and creativity to build different ecosystems.  All of this and more in the celebration of the natural world!
     
--What's Up With Our Beach? July 2 - 6 $205
  (closed July 4)  
This class will meet at Goleta Beach with Kim Keller-Box to look at the many aspects that make our coast line so unique and beautiful.   The science possibilities are endless in this outdoor classroom. Studies will focus on the currents and tides and their effects on the coastline throughout the year.  We will also look at the biology of the Goleta Slough and its importance to the watershed and wildlife.
     
--American Artists July 9 - July 13 $ 255
Join Kim Keller-Box to learn about the lives and art of some of America’s great artists. Alexander Calder and Georgia O’Keefe are just two of the many artists we will study.  Each day will bring new opportunities to express your creativity. Mediums from wire to pastels will be available to students as they research the artists’ style and create similar works.  Grab your smocks and join us!
     
--Nomads of the Sahara July 16 - July 20 $ 255
Travel through West Africa with Caitlin Tufts and investigate the lives of the nomads of the Sahara. Try your hand at making music on calabash drums, creating traditional crafts, and practicing the Fulfulde language of the Wodaabe people. We will also study the geography and development of the area through a variety of cultural activities.
     
--Photography Extravaganza July 23 - July 27 $ 255
Join Chris McKellar (Spanish teacher in Caitlin’s absence) as you explore this amazing world from behind the lens of a camera. This class will explore photography basics including how a camera works (much like our own eyes), photo composition and lighting and how film is developed. We will not be developing our own film but will learn about the process. Each student will need to bring 2 disposable cameras and will be responsible for the cost of film processing

for students entering 1st - 6th grades

Join Kathy Finck (Afterschool Care) for a fun, healthy, and engaging end to your summer! We will explore the
animals and plants of Goleta on a backyard safari; keep fit with outdoor games, pogosticking, stilt walking and more; then move into the kitchen to bake bread and make pizza! Various crafts will also be available.

After School Care June 19 - August 10 2:30 - 5:30 p.m.
$ 8 per day until 4 p.m. $12 per day after 4 p.m.

MCS staff members provide a relaxing, creative, end-of-the-day program for students who continue their school day past 2:30. Organic snacks will be provided. ASC is billed to your account after the fact and based on use. Please register in advance if you know you will need ASC regularly; however, drop-in use is an option. Please notify the office if your child will need ASC.

  • Enrollment is for full sessions only. Sessions will not be divided or pro-rated.
  • Children will need to bring their own lunches.
  • Classes may restrict entry ages.
  • MCS reserves the right to change staffing, schedules, and placement as needed.
